Planet S Review - Morningstar

Morningstar Mercredi's story is a tale of abuse, poverty, addiction and discrimination - and a tale of redemption and triumph. In this powerful memoir, Mercredi - an Aboriginal woman who grew up in Northern Saskatchewan and Alberta - recounts a harrowing personal history which included separation from her parents at an early age, sexual abuse by family members and others, teen pregnancy, and a descent into alcoholism and drug abuse. But while Mercredi's story is devastating in its tragedy, it is also ultimately uplifting, as she has battled her demons and won, becoming a strong and valuable contributor to her community. This is a story that needed to be told, and one that needs to be heard by Canadian society as a whole. It is all the more moving due to the all-too-common circumstances, which Mercredi found herself in as an Aboriginal woman in a white man's world, and due to the all-too-rare nature of her victory.
