A Regiment at War: The Loyal Eddies Remember the Battle for Europe, 1939 – 1945
In celebration of its 2008 Centennial as an organized militia,
The Loyal Edmonton Regiment presents this unique account of its
history as a significant Canadian fighting force, featuring first-person
accounts of its most famous engagement – the Battle of Ortona.
With historical roots that extend back to the citizen militia
that formed temporarily during the 1885 Rebellion,The
Loyal Edmonton Regiment has a long and honourable
history to celebrate.
The 101st Regiment was raised in 1908, and served in WWI, participating
in the crucial Vimy Ridge victory. Having undergone several
name changes and reorganizations since it’s beginning, the force
received its “Loyal Edmonton Regiment” name from King George
vi while it was already engaged in the Sicilian campaign in 1943.The “Loyal Eddies” are best-remembered for their part in the Battle of
Ortona, which to this day is considered a model example of the
techniques the unit developed for fighting in urban areas.
Ken Tingley uses both the details of the historical war record and
extensive personal accounts by surviving Loyal Eddies to create an
in-depth portrait of this significant force, through the memories of
its veterans, as it celebrates 100 years of service as part of Canada’s
proud military history.
